R5501 is a former USCG "A" Class Aids to Navigation Boat.  The vessel underwent a major overhaul during the winter of 2009 by personnel at GLERL's Lake Michigan Field Station.  R5501 gives GLERL the flexibility of a fast, maneuverable boat able to conduct heavy lifts with a small crew.  It is used for buoy and mooring deployments across the Great Lakes.  The vessel has limited overnight accommodations for 4.
