The Department of Natural Resources is dedicated to the preservation, protection, effective management, and maintenance of Wisconsin's natural resources. We are currently recruiting candidates on a statewide basis for the position of Research Vessel Captain. At a minimum, the Department will be filling the Captain position of the 56' R/V Hack Noyes based out of Bayfield, Wisconsin for work on Lake Superior.
Job Duties: This position will be a member of the Lake Superior Fisheries Team and will support the Lake Superior Fish Biologist in the assessment of sport and commercial fisheries. This position is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the R/V Hack Noyes and for providing a safe and effective work enviroment for all crew and passengers. This position will operate under potentially hazardous conditions in support of a wide variety of fisheries and law enforcement surveys.
Special Notes:
Open Water Work Activities: This position has cycles of open water work from April - December. Employees may be exposed to inclement weather, noise, vibration, motion, water temperatures slightly above freezing, fog, darkness, and sub-freezing air temperatures.
Equipment Usage: This position requires the use of GPS equipment, depth sounders, radar, marine radio, outboard motors, bilge and portable pumps, and hand and power tools, as well as miscellaneous heavy equipment such as hydraulic net lifters, diesel engines, generators, and pick-up trucks.
Lifting: This position may regularly require lifting in excess of 50 lbs.
Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Preventative maintenance of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems associated with marine vessels.
Navigation by GPS, radar, and dead reckoning.
Familiarity with Great Lakes navigation rules.
Knowledge of Lake Michigan and Lake Superior water conditions, depths, shoals, and weather patterns.
