This position is assigned to the above Deck Department of the M/V Spencer F. Baird to provide oversight of activities aboard the vessel, in support of the Vessel Master, to accomplish tasks necessary for safe operation. This position is assigned to the Jordan River National Fish Hatchery, Elmira, Michigan, duty station. The vessel base of the M/V Baird is Cheboygan, Michigan. This is permanent seasonal employment (annually recurring periods of work at least 6 months but less than 12 months during the calendar year). At 95 feet long and 31 feet and 6 inches wide, the M/V Baird operates in support of fish stocking, fish assessments, and environmental research on the Great Lakes and is powered by twin 800 horsepower engines that drive twin screws. The ship has twin trawling winches, plus a main crane that folds out to place cargo 25 feet beyond the docks. A stainless-steel galley, laundry center, and communications system make life comfortable at sea for employees who normally work a season from April through November and travel more than 3,000 miles on the Great Lakes, especially Lake Huron, Lake Michigan, and Lake Superior. The vessel may be away from its home port for up to 70 days at a time but does return to a port daily while engaged in stocking or assessment activities. For roughly 60% of the field season, the vessel will be operating out of its home port. Captain of the R/V Melosira

Position: Research Vessel Captain and Facilities Manager Employer: University of Vermont Employment Terms: Full-time, 9-month position Location: Rubenstein Ecosystem Science Laboratory, Burlington, Vermont Description: The incumbent will be responsible for the coordination and maintenance of the equipment, vehicles, and facilities of the Rubenstein Ecosystem Science Laboratory, located on the shores of Lake Champlain. The incumbent will operate the University’s 45-foot research vessel Melosira and smaller boats for research and teaching activities; assist with planning research activities and equipment preparation with university faculty and graduate students; train and supervise a seasonal deckhand; assist instructional activities with high school and college students and members of the public; communicate with state and federal biologists in their activities on the lake. Incumbent will also be responsible for maintaining accurate logbooks, budgeting, purchasing, and other duties as assigned. Skills: The incumbent is required to have at least a 50-ton operating license and demonstrated experience working on vessel deploying scientific equipment from vessels (e.g., water bottles, plankton nets, CTDs, fish trawls, gill nets), maintaining vessels, and working with the general public and/or students.
